Like a fast-ripening Pakistan Mango, Delirious are once again getting their distinctive texture and flavour ready for public consumption. Freshly picked from the tree, this latest edition of Cybersmalltalk gives you all the d:goodness you need for the day. Now go and wash your hands first...
It’s been crazier than usual these days. Between June 28th and July 12th the boys notched up 55186 airmiles each. With gigs in the USA and Australia to get them warmed up, Jon got back in time to welcome his second child into the world. Born on July 17th, Xanthia Joye is the 14th member of the D:Daddy club.
In between the flying, the packing and the birthing the band have been winding things up on the album. Martin and Stu G have been recording their final vocals for the album. According to Stew Smith the word that sums the album up is ‘fragile’ (see CybersSmalltalk #6 for more), and as the project draws closer to completion the buzz around it gets a little more hectic with every day that passes. Right now the band have lined up a New Zealander called Sam Gibson to mix it, and it’s felt all round that his fresh ears will add a little extra magic to what is already a hugely anticipated album. Sam worked with the band before when he mixed the track Touch. He’s also worked with Neil Finn (ex-Crowded House frontman) and the choice of him as mixer signals the kind of direction things are taking.
Future Plans
Following on from some tasty gigs at a couple of the Acquire The Fire festivals the band are dead pleased that they’re on their way back for more of the same throughout the autumn. There are also plans coming together right now for a spring tour of both North America and the UK. We’ll sort you out with more as we find out.
Strange News
Who would have though that Stu G’s guitar collection would be less desirable than one of his signed plectrums? Well, it seems that this is the way of things as we recently tracked down the ‘Ultimate D:memorabilia List’. Number one is the King Of Fools jester hat, number 2 are Stew’s ‘over the top’ glasses from the Take Me Away video, and number three are the coloured umbrellas from the ‘In Pursuit of Happiness’ video. Incidentally, these brollies got chucked in a skip the other week, but Stew’s still got the shades, which we’ll be making available to a lucky competition winner next month. To be in with a chance of winning make sure that we’ve got your postal address as we’ll be sending out a paper copy of SmallTalk to everyone on the database early next month. Send us your details if you need to.
Big News
Who was that Greek bloke who went into the Underworld? Well, Delirious might not be so up on their classical mythology, but they know a good gig venue when they find one. That’s why they’ve got themselves a block booking at the Camden Underworld from the 17th to 20th December. These will be a set of Christmas gigs to remember, and if the last showcase their is anything to go by, Santa better make sure his reindeer are well-watered. With an absolute capacity of 500 for each one, this intimate venue will be host to four nights of the best live music around. Get yourself sorted out with your tickets from September 1st, but do it quick before they all go.
Big News 2:the sequel
As if the gigs weren’t enough to have you dusting off the baubles, we’ve got another treat for you. It’s free and it’s musical: yes, it’s free music. On the 1st October and 1st November www.delirious.co.uk will be offering you the chance to download two exclusive and brand new tracks from the latest album. How nice are we? Very. Make sure your mouse is squeak free and your hard drive is nicely free. Keep up with the email updates to make sure you don’t miss out.
Behind the scenes
Settle down and smarten up. This time around it’s over to design department darling Mark to lower himself into the hot seat...
Full name: Mark Edward Debnam
Family: wife [Tash] 10 month old boy [Elijah]
Job title: Graphic Designer
How did you become a designer? Through training at college in Amersham (Bucks) and London, and then seven years of working in London for various companies.
Describe your average day down at the office: Coffee when I get in at some time between 8.30 and 10 (depending on how busy we are). Then some creative research (looking at magazines for half an hour), followed by some serious work. At the moment I’m working on the new Delirious album, t shirts and stands for summer festivals as well as day to day Furious stuff.
What is good design? A clear idea that is well communicated and aesthetically pleasing.
What piece of Furious work are you most proud of? The intro visuals to the Fire Tour. After spending a year in TV it was great to use this for the guys. I'm also pleased with the Archived dvd packaging.
What’s on your office stereo at the moment? Foo Fighters, Beck and The Propellerhads.
When did you last have a pay rise? Um... um...
When did you last pull a sickie? Um... um...
What’s your worst fashion mistake? My current hair style. It’s time for a trim.
How do you make your design fit with the music? By being current and listening to the early demos as soon as they come out of the studio.
Which recent album’s artwork do you admire most? I like the Blur Think Tank special edition packaging [although it was slightly nicked from amnesiac by radiohead].
