All in all it’s a tasty little time down here, with the great soufflé that is Delirious? lifting, setting and generally cooking in all the right places. Tuck in for a quick taster…

Vultures, Golf and a Sense of Humour… Delirious? in TV Shock Revelation!

9th May saw the airing of a 30 minute documentary about the boys. And what did those residents of the south of England get when they tuned into this particular episode of ‘The Frame’? Revelations of a most shocking nature, that’s what. Martin talked about his love life, Stew about shandy and tour manager Cattle tried to bribe customs officials with free copies of D:CDs. Shocking. And funny. And you know what, the whole crew came over brilliantly. They were witty, relaxed and confident, even if Martin did lose 10 golf balls and Stew made a gag about how there are so many signed D:CDs about that it’s now the unsigned ones that are the hard-to-find collectors’ versions. All in all this seemed like a chance to view the band as they are now… mature and self-assured. They know they’ve got the tunes and they know they’ve got a message. If people don’t feel happy to listen then that’s fine, but the band aren’t going to waste time feeling embarrassed and trying to cover the truth up. Fair play to them.

future plans:
The first ever Delirious? DVD: is released on Saturday [31st may] featuring:

1. ‘A View From The Terraces’ – this performance video shows the d:boys live and on tour, including some fine backstage and documentary footage.

2. ‘Promod:e’ – the band’s first collection of videos and behind-the-scenes footage.

3. Then there are the visuals: the live video projections used for five of the greatest D: tracks (Fire, Alien, Rollercoaster, Obsession, Investigate), as well as a whole load of stills and biographical info.

4. PLUS (and this is where it gets really nice) for the first time ever you can get the previously unreleased videos to Waiting For The Summer, I Could Sing of Your Love Forever and Take Me Away. How good is that?

See the main news section for further information and very special hooded sweatshirt offer. [DVD: and Zip-up Hoodie only £30]

worldwide roundup:
The band have a little worldwide news around in the form of plans to visit Canada, The USA, Australia and Sweden in the near future. Tough life, huh?

The globe has also been through a bit of a 90 degree shrinking pre-wash and come out altogether smaller thanks to the US and Canadian launch of Libertad, D:’s first ever Spanish language album. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2000 there were 35.3 million Hispanic or Latino people in the US while more than 322 million people worldwide speak Spanish as their first language. Getting the tunes out is not only polite, it’s also right, and so far the early reaction has been totally positive. One reviewer gushed that ‘eso sin ponernos a diferenciar el mercado al cual nos referimos’ while another picked up on a whole new side to the album, praising its ‘algunas de sus palabras y o frases’. I think we can all say ‘amen’ to that.

lyrical direction: [Stu g, writing from the back of the studio. May 2003]

When we’ve been writing the new songs, we’ve wanted to get them to a more completed stage, lyrically, earlier than we have in the past. Not to say there isn’t work to do but the aim has been to know what we’re saying in the song now at the tracking stage, rather than having a single verse or chorus and recording a band version, then finishing the lyrics.

So it’s meant a little more time and effort at the front end.
What I’d like to do rather than give you a whole song is give away a few tit bits and snippets hopefully to give a flavour of what’s to come.

The titles are all working titles and may not be called that by the time the album is released.

In the song “With You” we’re really excited by the middle section that explodes out of the song it’s kind of a “heart cry”:

You never let me go you never let me fall
I know you’re in the pain and when I’ve got it all
And I’m hanging on to you ‘cos it’s all that I can do
‘Cos knowing you is beautiful.

In the song “Rain Down” the second verse says

Back to the start, my heart is heavy
Feels like it’s time, to dream again
I hear your voice, and yes I’m ready
To live the life, to sing your song
Yes I belong

In the song “Majesty (Here I Am)” there’s a strong theme of grace again:

Here I am humbled by the love that you give
Forgiven so that I can forgive
Here I stand with my simple song of love
Giving everything that I have

Now I’ve found the greatest love of all is mine
Since you laid down your life
The greatest sacrifice

behind the scenes:

The Manager, Tony Patoto

You might not know this, but Tony used to spend quite a bit of time down in Littlehampton when he was a lad. As well as being a Canadian, Mr P is also an old school chap from Guildford, Surrey. Seems like he and his crew used to take it upon themselves to spread a bit of their Surrey charm among the good people of Littlehampton of a summer’s afternoon. They’d get in his T-reg Chrysler Sunbeam (colour: Red, name: ‘the love machine’) and steam it off down south till they hit the sea.

Well, that was a long time ago, and all wounds are healed, all reputations covered over by the forgiving moss of time. For now, Tony is no longer some weekend James Dean in a hatchback, but a thoroughly respectable member of the community. Kind of. What he certainly happens to be is one of the louder members of the office (apparently his is the only room that has been soundproofed). Tony’s enthusiasm has been helping to drive the D:thing since he joined in 1997, leaving a tasty job at mainstream label Total Records.

Tony’s past brought him into contact with all the fizz and sparkle of the music industry and helped sharpen up his eye for a deal. He has been instrumental in helping D: boys reach a global audience, which is quite something. Then again, he was also instrumental in getting the Mr Blobby single out. Such is life.
