Who is Delirious?
It depends how you ask the question. If you’re trying to work out who’s in the band it’s easy: Jon, Martin, Stew, Stu G and Tim. They formed in and around the part of the English south coast not known as the Riviera. Littlehampton’s one of those easily forgotten towns that they band are still a part of. Don’t ask why, but they seem to love it down there. Must be something to do with the sea air.
Anyhow, the band formed in the early 1990s. First came Martin, Stew and Tim, joining together to sort out the tunes for a bunch of bored looking kids who had had enough of chip shops and car parks. Not that the three founder members were some kind of crack social work team. The truth about their birth is simple: it was all to do with the church. That’s right, they’re Christians – might as well get that one out of the way nice and early. So, having found that people preferred their tunes to chip shops and car parks the band started to tour. Within a year or two the band had attracted Stu G on guitars and Jon on bass. By 1996 they’d all given up their jobs and had jumped in full time. By 1997 they were getting regular invites to play throughout the States. From then on the albums kicked in, the tours warmed up and Delirious was on the case.
Since the early days they’ve had chart success (** top 40 UK singles, ** top 20 UK albums, ** top 20 US albums, blah, blah, blah) and have shifted more units in America than most British artists. Right now they revel in their global underground status, even if things seem to be getting decidedly mainstream in Germany, which has been a surprise to all of us.
If you’re asking who bears the marks of ‘uncontrolled excitement or emotion’ then you’re stuck. They’re all pretty normal, although catch them in the right mood and there’s a glint in the eye.

Who's in?
It’s the team that counts, really, and the Delirious family spreads pretty wide. It might be a little cheesey but ask the band’s fans and they’d pretty much say that they feel like they’re part of the crew. Not that they’re made to work or anything, but there’s a loyalty there that runs deep and true.

Who's out?
Nobody. The line-up’s been set ever since the band was formed. The early days saw Martin, Stew and Tim joined by various session musicians, but apart from the odd guest appearance Delirious has played by itself ever since birth, and played very nicely too.

Who is Jon?
Good question. The youngest. The bass player. The quirky one. He’s also the brother of the sisters married to three of the members of the band. And he probably buys more music than the others

Who is Martin?
Ah, the enigma that embodies the band: rocks with a head in the clouds. But here’s the question: is he enigmatic because he’s got the mic or does he have it because he’s enigmatic? The fact is that Martin sings, plays guitar and writes much of the band’s material. Over the years he’s grown into being a fine frontman – catch him at the right venue and he’s actually very funny.

Who is Stew?
Technically he's no longer Stew - he's now Smeezer: designologist. Stew was the founder drummer, the guy who played the skins for decades and who finally, in 2008, moved on to pursue a new chapter of his life making everything in the world look great. Delirious still shakes to his beats.

Who is Stu G?
Used to claim that he had the oldest age but youngest head. Now plays golf well - if a little obsessively - which kind of puts the claim to youthfulness to bed. Plays lead guitars and writes songs. Adds full-on flavour and texture to the sound with some truly inspired sounds.

Who is Tim?
Keyboards. The Delirious sound gets its spine from Tim’s work. So does the band’s business. With more networks at the end of his fingers than most, he joins the dots between what they are and what they’re chasing.

What was their big bang?
A car accident in 1995 in which Martin and Jon were injured. Jon walked but Martin wound up in hospital for some weeks. Time to think brought Martin to a conclusion: he should go full time with the band. The others agreed.

Why the question mark?
Who knows. Being a designer Stew always liked to mess around with words, so the question mark seemed to fit the band’s early days. People were always asking questions about whether they were or weren’t Christians/rockers/any good

Were they ever known by another name?
Yes. The event that they formed to play for was known as Cutting Edge. They became known as The Cutting Edge band. Creative, yes?

Who are they signed to?
Sparrow/EMI in Canada/North America, Furious Records everywhere else. The deals is that they own Furious, which they set up themselves in 1997. They also own Fierce Distribution.

Who cares?
Good point. On one hand the sales are pretty unimportant – what counts are the stories that come back from the people who get the music, and let me tell you, there are some pretty crazy stories out there. But, then again, Delirious have sold more records worldwide than a whole load of others. They’re rightly proud of their success, just like they’re proud of their fans.

Where do they record their albums?
Anywhere, in studios, on planes, in living rooms, on tour buses, wherever music can be made.

What’s their poison?
Golf, endorphins and being told that they’ve made someone happy.

Where can I find Delirious lyrics?
Inlay cards and the internet.  Click here.

What about DVDs?
Access:d draws together everything they’ve ever put on a screen so far. Then there’s Unified Praise – a live gig featuring others, recorded in Sydney, Australia, 2004. But the Big Daddy of them all is Now Is The Time – a full length live show captured in 2005 when the band played at a church in Chicago.

What is The Happy Song?
The kind of track that won’t sit down. Recorded and released in 1994 when they were still known as The Cutting Edge Band. Opinion on its worth is divided: some see it as the ultimate feelgood track that needs to be held in reverence while others reckon it’s best left in the past. The band ditched the mandolin part and re-worked it for a live show. Still, it only ever comes out if someone asks for it nicely.

What videos have they made?
Deeper [1997]
Promise [1998]
Gravity
It’s Okay

Who is Hutch?
A ginger Scot who started out as photographer, progressed to lighting, live visuals and videos. You’ve probably met him already.

Where can I get Delirious merchandise?
Martin’s brother, Paul (AKA Merchy) is often selling the stuff at gigs, but you can also get it all from the shop. purashop.com

Is there a fan club?
No , but there is a Living Room. Sign up and make yourself comfortable.

How can I contact the band?
Email: info@furiousrecords.co.uk

How can I contact the manager?
Good question. The band’s first manager – the wonderful Tony Patoto – moved out to Nashville to work his magic. These days Tim’s the guy with the diary, the busy mobile and firm handshake.

Tell me more about that Patoto man.
Having done time making sure that we couldn’t get away from acts like Right Said Fred and Mr Blobby, he got himself a proper job and signed up for the ride with Delirious. Good man. Big shoulders. Canadian – strange sense of humour.

Who is Dave Wood?
Well, if you’re one of the hardcore fans you’re probably already aware of Mr Wood. If you’re not one of those types but are planning on becoming one, then Mr Wood is the man to envy. The most privileged of fans, Dave runs www.delirious.org.uk - the official unofficial site. He gets there first, knows the numbers and has even clocked up a few air miles with the boys.

Who is Craig Borlase?
Writer (not of songs but of words you can’t really sing) who’s been around the band for a while. In fact, he is me, which is quite weird.

Who is Ian Cattle?
The man with more plans than black t shirts (and that’s saying something). Ian is the band’s tour manager and booking agent. If you want them, you’ll need him. Ian used to keep bees and sell honey, but now he’s married to Missy.

What is Furious? Records
More than a toy, less than an empire. Furious is freedom, the band’s passport to doing things how they want, when they want.

What is Purashop.com?
Your passport to quality cds at stunning prices, the best books, Bibles, clothes and gig tickets. Everything essential for the eternally minded.

Who is Evans?
The new Stew. Well, not quite as he's not married or mid-way towards becoming the bionic man. But he's the drummer now, and we love him for it. He grew up in the band's hometown so he remembers what life was like when the others had hair.
